DevOps- The Evolution of Agile
The role of the tester is more important than ever as environments and applications are becoming ever more complex. We must test as we go and we must support this through the use of tools as they act as the control panel in our delivery.
Last week QualiTest hosted “DevOps – The Evolution of Agile” Meetup in London, UK. We welcomed various IT professionals with an interest in the evolution of Agile methodology to DevOps, the benefits of a close partnership between development and operations staff and the challenges faced when looking to introduce and implement DevOps into your software testing team.
The morning was informal, interactive and collaborative, QualiTest UK CEO, Grant Obermaier kicked off the session introducing the key speakers from Marks and Spencer, Specsavers and QualiTest who shared their history, experience and different journeys to DevOps. It was great to have three very different and interesting perspectives.
Jason Taylor, former IT Shared Delivery Director for Specsavers, gave an insight into the role of the Test Professional in an Agile / DevOps future and how the challenges for today’s testers became the catalyst for change. We heard how DevOps is an extension of Agile to include operations and how it bridges the gaps within a classic IT delivery organisation. It was challenged if testing in many organisations is Quality Assurance or actually Quality Control! But, with testing proceeding throughout the lifecycle from design through to delivery and with a shift left in culture to DevOps being part of the delivery process, QA will be assured!
All three speakers stressed that the role of the tester is more important than ever as environments and applications are becoming ever more complex. We must test as we go and we must support this through the use of tools as they act as the control panel in our delivery.
Christopher Livett, Senior Test Consultant here at QualiTest, gave a fantastic presentation and detailed overview of his journey to DevOps at giffgaff. He discussed how giffgaff’s journey has recently transitioned from Agile to more of a DevOps focused team, in order to improve the agile process and the way the team work. We heard first-hand how introducing DevOps can be a tricky process to initially implement yet will deliver numerous benefits including faster fixes, more automation, improved environments and instant feedback. Giffgaff’s journey continues to improving the DevOps process.
Simon White, Marks and Spencer Group DevOps Manager, concluded the session with a concise interpretation of the disconnect between traditional SQA & Agile approaches and how DevOps can be perceived as the ‘mature Agile’ model. By applying clearly defined principles, lean ways of working, test automation and continuous innovation, DevOps will enable; Agile and Waterfall ways of working, consistent delivery of code, process visibility, software configuration management and lean governance. It is emphasised that we must have maximum automated testing available as early in the life cycle as possible, automate everything and select the right tools to get the job done! DevOps is about how we use technology to improve the process, change culture and drive organisational change.
