Qualitest Certifies DO-178B for BSP Project with Elbit Systems

Client Overview

Elbit Systems Ltd. is an international defense Electronics Company engaged in a wide range of programs throughout the world. Elbit Systems and its subsidiaries operate in the areas of aerospace, land and naval systems, command, control, communications, computers, intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance (“C4ISR”), unmanned aircraft systems (“UAS”), advanced electro-optics, electro-optic space systems, EW suites, signal intelligence (“SIGINT”) systems, data links and communications systems and radios

Business Needs and Objectives

Elbit needed verification of the BSP products for the Dassault Company, requiring certification through the DO-178B standard and testing activities in State of Involvement (SOI) 2 and 3. Elbit initially approached Qualitest because a pure-play testing company can perform more comprehensive testing, and Qualitest has been leading software testing projects for Elbit for 10 years.

Qualitest was also chosen because of their design and delivery of contextualized solutions that leverage deep industry-specific understanding with technology-specific competencies and unique testing-focused assets. The DO-178 standard also requires different companies for development versus testing.

The Qualitest Solution

Qualitest based the testing project in Israel, utilizing their professional DO-178 testers to complete the relevant tasks for SOI2+SOI3 in the DO178-B standard. These tasks were completed using the LDRA tools, which were recommended by us.

A Qualitest Project Manager and team leads assisted in defining the cycle plan, building a training program for the testers and reviewing each deliverable and each defect. 120 testers were utilized to verify 28 BSP products over a 12 month period.

918 High-Level Requirement (HLR) test cases and 9145 Low-Level Requirement (LL) test cases were written and tested throughout the course of the project. Managing a large project like this required more maintenance and control than other software testing projects. This project required management of a third outsourced party in India, while managing the unstable lab and software that was encountered.

Using Qualitest’s DO-178 solution, Elbit certified their BSP product and passed the formal DO-178 certification, guaranteeing high quality deliverables.

To complete and approve all requirements, Qualitest provided Elbit with a fully managed testing solution for all quality assurance activities, a team that was easy to ramp up and down according to development work flow, and a quality product. This project was completed successfully with a fixed price for all projects.

Following the engagement, Elbit was able to effectively release their products and certify the product with relevant authorities. Because Elbit did not manage the process themselves and the testing was performed with testers instead of developers, Elbit saved time, money and resources by utilizing Qualitest’s services.
