Stephen, a video game enthusiast, loves sci-fi, fantasy, computers, automation, efficiency, logic, science, cats, and analyzing, among various other things. A graduate in Computer Information Systems, Stephen got his first exposure to coding during his graduate program, where he acquired a decent grasp on how most programs work. Apart from coding, he also attended business classes such as economics, accounting and business law.

Technical expertise

Stephen brings expertise in coding languages such as Java, HTML, and C++. He also gained valuable experience working with C#, Visual Basic, Android, C, JavaScript, Pearl, Ajax, Python, and the Alice scripting language during his academic career.

For Stephen, learning to look at a piece of code or new coding language and figuring it out is the most valuable and exciting part of the learning process.

Software testing and the Qualitest journey

Software testing was an obvious and logical choice upon completion of his degree. He says, “An advantage of software testing is that you get to engage with many challenges and tools.”

Stephen joined Qualitest as an intern as a part of the NFAR’s (National Foundation for Autism Research) technical program. Within two months of his internship, he became a full-time employee due to his dedication and hard work. A detail-oriented individual, Stephen runs test cases over and over with the same focus.

Advice to the future testers

Stephen recommends getting an internship or some part-time exposure before starting a regular job. Expanding on his suggestion, he says, “One of the biggest hindrances for me when job hunting after college, was lack of previous experience. Having no prior working experience closes many doors and puts you in a difficult position. So, having a work experience gives your profile a boost. Get an internship or a temporary job before embarking on your real-time career.”

Life apart from testing

When Stephen is not busy running test cases, he splits his time between playing video games and keeping up with Anime and Manga. He also enjoys playing table-top games (ex: D&D, Exalted, Pathfinder, Vampire – the masquerade, Rifts, BESM Tri-Stat, etc) with friends and building Gundam models.

Between his love for video games and computers, Stephen also enjoys listening to music and his recent passion – cooking.

Stephen loves the YouTube anime podcast – Trash Taste. Talking about the books he enjoys the most, Stephen says, “I very much enjoyed the Artemis Fowl series growing up, but most recently have been expanding my literary pallet towards another genre.”
