Client overview

The Client, the largest supplier of electrical power in Israel and the Palestinian territories, is responsible for building, maintaining, and operating power generation stations, substations, and transmission and distribution networks. They aimed to implement data transfer between smart meters and sub-systems. To ensure a smooth transition, they required a data management process that minimized risks, preserved business continuity, and upheld their high service standards.

Business needs and objectives

The project aimed to facilitate a seamless operational transition while addressing key business requirements:

  • Comprehensive validation: Ensuring all smart meter functionalities were thoroughly tested and validated.
  • Optimized operations: Enhancing efficiency across data ingestion, processing, persistence, validation, and consumption.
  • Risk mitigation: Minimizing business disruptions throughout the migration process.
  • Automation implementation: Reducing manual errors by integrating advanced automation processes.

To achieve these objectives, a structured and strategic approach was essential to ensure regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and an optimal user experience.

The Qualitest solution

Qualitest conducted comprehensive end-to-end testing of data transfer between Smart Meters and key subsystems, including Meter Data Management, Workforce Management, Head End System (HES), CRM, Billing, and Data Warehousing. Key solutions implemented:

  • On-site validation: Executed both manual and automated acceptance testing on-site.
  • Device-testing: Performed firmware upgrade validation to ensure seamless updates.
  • Network testing: Tested data transfers across both Cellular and Wired Power Line Communication (PLC) meters.
  • Conducted in-depth testing of critical Smart Meter functionalities, including:
    • Remote activation and deactivation. Connect and disconnect.
    • Debt and payment delay notifications.
    • Electricity usage limitations. (Load Limit).
    • Demand estimation accuracy.
    • Alarm triggers for CIM events such as meter tampering, voltage fluctuations, and missing readings.
  • Automation: Implemented automated framework to test the end-to-end scenarios to validate the data processed.

Key benefits

Qualitest successfully implemented a seamless transition strategy, ensuring business continuity while achieving key objectives:

  • Comprehensive test coverage: Automation reduced regression run time by 90%, eliminated human errors, and achieved 100% test coverage.
  • Improved user experience: Enhanced data management visibility and faster order processing led to improved service levels.
  • Scalable operations: Developed robust and scalable workflows to support future growth and expansion.
  • Risk-free migration: Executed a smooth migration with minimal disruptions, ensuring uninterrupted business operations throughout the data management process.

Qualitest’s customized approach empowered the Client to effectively oversee the data management process, ensuring comprehensive coverage, operational efficiency, and a customer-focused strategy. This resulted in a more streamlined, cost-efficient, and scalable ecosystem, fully aligned with the Client’s long-term business objectives.
